Feds Look at Tire Safety

In a special investigative report on tire safety adopted by the National Transportation Safety Board, the agency found that the way tires are currently registered and recalled is ineffective. It also said there is insufficient guidance by the tire and automotive industries on the risks associated with tire ageing.

The NTSB undertook the special investigation following probes into four tire-related accidents in Florida, Louisiana, Arizona and California that killed 12 people and injured 42 others. Here's What Happens During One Day at an Auto Auction

It's a hot southern Wednesday at the ADESA auto auction just south of Atlanta. The 200-acre facility has its own detailers, service department, and auctioneers. The doors open at 8:30 a.m., and the machinery is spinning by 9:30. The auction starts with three lanes, quickly followed by a fourth. By 10:15, six of the eight available lanes are going full tilt. more ...

Despite Volkswagen's recent diesel scandal, Jaguar Land Rover is pushing ahead with ambitious plans to roll out the technology across most of its lineup in the coming years. Jaguar and Land Rover will add diesel engine variants to every model in their lineups, except for the Jaguar F-Type sports car. Land Rover launched the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport with available 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 diesels, and together they have sold more than 330 units so far this month, their first on sale in the United States.

JLA officials say they've seen no fallout from VW's emissions problem and are adamant their diesels meet EPA standards. "That has been our strategy, and it is not changing," Joe Eberhardt, Jaguar Land Rover North America CEO, told the Automotive Press Association on Wednesday in Detroit. "You have to deal with the situations as they arrive. We are confident of diesel." more...

Why won't automakers slap on a turbo badge anymore?

Posted by Allen Willey at

Where have all the turbos gone? Not the actual pieces that go in the engine, mind you, those are everywhere these days as automakers downsize cylinder counts and boost efficiency and CO2 claims.

But the turbo badges and fanfare are missing.

Back when turbos were something to get excited about there was "turbo-driven," "turbonium," and "The Turbo Zone," among other silly lines. But now that basically every car is getting some sort of boost even on the lowliest trims, automakers are almost sliding in the turbos under the radar. Or if you look at some of the nomenclature, pretending they don't exist at all.
